The boundaries of art and identity are pushed back at the Doppelganger!exhibition at the Palais de Tokyo ! Presented by Jakob Lena Knebl (b. 1970, Baden, Austria) and Ashley Hans Scheirl (b. 1956, Salzburg, Austria), this masterful work offers a plunge into worlds where design, literature and culture merge in a blend of humor and grotesquerie. The exhibition runs from October 19, 2023 to January 7, 2024.
This Austrian duo, who have already made their mark at major events such as the 15th Lyon Biennial of Contemporary Art and the 59th Venice Biennale, invites you to immerse yourself in "spaces of desire". Through a unique scenography combining carpets, mirrors and islands of light, the visitor becomes an active element in the exhibition, traversing a "disquieting strangeness" that recalls the diverse inspirations of the artists - from the shades of Mary Shelley and Ada Lovelace to Barbapapa and Luigi Colani.
Beyond mere observation, Doppelganger! is a profound reflection on identity. Playing with the prefix "trans", as in transgenre or transmedium, Knebl and Scheirl deconstruct the traditional idea of identity, taking it from mannerism to postmodernism, while anticipating a future cybernetic existence. An exhibition not to be missed at the Palais de Tokyo, before its presentation at the Deichtorhallen Hamburg in spring 2024!
