Reconciling the old and the new by giving new life to furniture from the Mobilier National: this is the principle behind an exhibition full of surprises organized by the official furniture repository of the French Republic. The institution breathes new life into some of its pieces, while showcasing contemporary designers, with the exhibition Les Aliénés du Mobilier national, le retour.
Indeed, Les Aliénés is enjoying a second season, from October 11, 2023 to January 7, 2024. To discover the new works in this new edition, visit the Galerie des Gobelins, in the 13th arrondissement. This free exhibition features 53 contemporary pieces by 39 artists and visual artists.
The Mobilier National has a rich history, preserving in its collections the furniture of French power, whether royal, republican or imperial. This exceptional furniture repository furnishes and supplies official buildings such as the Élysée Palace and government ministries. After centuries of existence, the collections of the Mobilier National are very substantial... That's why it's sometimes necessary to sort them out, in order to get rid of certain worthless pieces. These pieces then become "alienated".
To give these pieces a new lease of life, the institution has created this unique exhibition. The alienated pieces are entrusted to contemporary artists. They are free to reinvent, embellish, modify and sublimate these objects, which then return to the Mobilier National collections.
Tables, chairs, desks, consoles, bedside tables, candlesticks, chests of drawers... All the furniture sold is given new colors, new materials, new volumes... A real makeover!
Behind this project also lies an eco-responsible approach , making the most of unused materials and objects in good condition.
