The famous painter Théodore Géricault died in 1824, after a rich career, and many masterpieces still admired today. To commemorate this special bicentenary, the Musée de la Vie Romantique is dedicating an exhibition to the French artist, and more particularly to one of his passions...
From May 15 to September 15, 2024, come and discover Géricault's Horses, a thematic painting exhibition exploring this motif so frequent in the artist's works. Some one hundred paintings from public and private collections have been brought together for this unique exhibition.
Horses were Géricault's undying passion: from his earliest drawings to his greatest paintings, the painter was always fascinated by these animals, their anatomy, their emotions, their lives... Some ten paintings and several hundred drawings of horses are by Géricault: the artist admired, analyzed and studied every aspect of this animal.
You'll discover works depicting horses in the army, at the racetrack, in the stables or in the fields, on parade or at rest, from birth to death... Every movement, feeling, reaction and emotion is depicted with great finesse and care. For Géricault, the horse was a highly aesthetic creature, a symbol of power.
The Musée de la Vie Romantique explores this all-consuming passion in a tour divided into five chapters: The Political Horse, The Sanctuary Stable, Rome: The Free Horse Race, London: Dandies and Proletarians and The Death of the Horse. In these different sections, Géricault's art and know-how are highlighted in a variety of ways: a horse's coat reveals the painter's work with light, battle scenes or races show his precise study of anatomy, movement...
From war to the racetrack to the stable, this exhibition should delight all horse lovers: the painter's passion is strongly felt in every painting and every sketch.
An original way to pay tribute to this major painter and his passion for the equestrian world!
