Small or large, sober or colorful, simple or whimsical: hats are an art form in their own right, and Stephen Jones has mastered them to perfection. The Palais Galliera is dedicating an unprecedented retrospective exhibition to the British milliner, on view from October 19, 2024 to March 16, 2025.
The Stephen Jones, chapeaux d'artistes! exhibition brings together nearly 400 works, including more than 170 hats, 40 complete silhouettes and a variety of drawings, photos and videos, in a journey that traces the rich career of Stephen Jones. These pieces reveal the milliner's creative process, his inspirations, collaborations and encounters, the importance of Paris in his work, and the place of hats and their designers in the world of contemporary fashion.
Graduating from London's prestigious Saint Martin's School in 1979, Stephen Jones quickly developed a passion for the art of the hat. In just a few years, he established himself as a leading designer in his field, counting a certain Princess Diana among his clients.
Jean-Paul Gaultier Vivienne Westwood, Thierry Mugler, Marc Jacobs, Comme des Garçons: the milliner is multiplying his collaborations. He has a special relationship with Dior, with whom he has worked for 30 years. Stephen Jones' success is unquestionable, and his audacious universe has strongly influenced today's fashion world.
The exhibition retraces the designer's career, from his beginnings to his latest successes, including his inspirations, the importance of Paris and France in his art, and his many artistic collaborations. Those already familiar with the milliner will be delighted to find numerous hats, photographs and creations, some of which come directly from Stephen Jones' private collections. Those discovering the milliner in his entirety can admire some truly astonishing works, from elegant and inventive hats to more classic creations that marked their period.
The longevity of Stephen Jones' career makes for a rich and varied exhibition, where berets mingle with beaded headdresses. One room is devoted to the milliner's creative process, offering a glimpse into his unique world.
By the way, is there really such a thing as a hat head? For Stephen Jones, hats can suit everyone. Those who want to wear them can always find a shape, materials and colors that will make them stand out. What's more, for the designer, a hat can be a great confidence booster, making you feel good about yourself, whatever your outfit of the day!
Lovers of fashion and haute couture, don't miss this special exhibition at the Palais Galliera, dedicated to an artist and an accessory that deserve to be highlighted far more often.
