Do you know Heinz Berggruen? The Musée de l'Orangerie invites us to discover this important 20th-century art collector and dealer, with a surprising exhibition full of treasures... From October 2, 2024 to January 27, 2025, don't miss the exhibition Heinz Berggruen, un marchand et sa collection.
Heinz Berggruen was born in Berlin in 1914, and fled Nazi Germany in the 1930s. He took refuge in France, where he learned literature and journalism, before moving to the West Coast of the United States to discover the world of art. Returning to France after the war, Heinz Berggruen was swept up in the fascinating world of art. He started out as an art dealer in a small gallery on Place Dauphine. He then moved to rue de l'Université, where he could give free rein to his passion: the graphic arts of modern artists.
This collector and lover of modern art quickly found success in the Parisian artistic and intellectual milieu. He met the great poets, historians, critics, dealers and collectors of his time. His particular but inspired tastes made him a reference in his milieu.
The exhibition at the Musée de l'Orangerie reveals the treasures of this collector, usually kept at the Museum Berggruen. On display are some one hundred masterpieces by Picasso, Klee, Matisse and Giacometti: masters and innovators in their respective genres, artists admired past and present.
Heinz Berggruen was a complete admirer of the work of Picasso and Klee: his collection offers a comprehensive overview of the entire careers of these two artists. The art dealer was also charmed by Giacometti's famous filiform sculptures or Matisse's papiers collés, which some consider to be his most important works.
Through his experiences and encounters, and above all by following his own tastes, Heinz Berggruen has built up an exceptional and priceless collection of 20th-century works, bringing together some of the most important works ofmodern art.
