After conquering the Venice Biennale, Philip Colbert's lobsters land in Paris. The pop-art artist is installing his giant sculptures at Station F, the Parisian start-up campus in the 13th arrondissement. For the duration of a summer exhibition, Philip Colbert invites us to discover his colorful and amusing universe, made up of curious, adventurous and artistic lobsters.
Philip Colbert isexhibiting eight lobster sculptures and an inflatable structure on the roof of Station F from July 9 to August 2, 2024. The artist uses the codes of pop art and surrealism to question our globalized consumer society and our detachment from nature.
Through his works, the creator revisits thehistory of art in his own way. The autobiographical character of the lobster allows the artist to express his vision of the world and of art. As critical as he is admiring, Philip Colbert links past and present with these unexpected and zany sculptures. " I'm very connected to art history, and I think art is a language, so there's a dialogue between my sculptures and the artists who came before me ," explains Philip Colbert.
In turn, these lobsters wear costumes referencing Vincent Van Gogh, Murakami, Andy Warhol, Damien Hirst, Duchamp... These influences are as important to Philip Colbert's work as philosophy and cultural symbols. For the artist, the lobster is synonymous witheternity, life and death. By dressing his character in the emblems of his colleagues, he continues to bring their works to life through his modern creations.
This free exhibition becomes a game for art lovers: can you find the hidden reference to a movement or a great artist? However, you don't need to be an expert to appreciate Philip Colbert's lobsters: these original, colorful sculptures are fascinating just as they are.
