Galerie Perrotin welcomes Katherina Olschbaur 's first major European exhibition in France, entitled Sweet Expulsion. From September 9 to October 21, 2024, the Austrian artist invites visitors to plunge into a universe where color, form and personal mythologies meet to create works as enigmatic as they are captivating.
In Sweet Expulsion, Katherina Olschbaur draws on the techniques of Abstract Expressionism, blending autobiographical elements with intimate mythologies to transport us " beyond our burning desires ". Her canvases, on the borderline between dream and memory, are characterized by a bold use of color. Katherina Olschbaur, inspired by Color Field painting, uses color as a primary element, meticulously applied to evoke emotion. Indigo, burgundy, metallic touches: each tone is chosen with almost meditative precision, creating compositions that prompt us to question the very nature of pigmented space.
The exhibition's central work, Expulsion, a diptych depicting a polycephalic angel, evokes the Roman god Janus, symbol of beginnings and ends. Through this mythological figure, the artist addresses the question of time and transition, recurring themes in his work. The angel's two heads, one facing the past and the other the future, reflect the instability of time, a concept that Katherina Olschbaur explores throughout this series.
As the artist evokes through his work, " finding meaning in the fragmentation caused by the phenomena of our lives is a task that requires us to see further than modernity itself ". An invitation to go beyond the limits of the everyday to discover a new paradise, just beyond the surface.
