Did you know that Claude Debussy, the illustrious French composer, was born on August 22, 1862, in Saint-Germain-en-Laye, in the Yvelines region of France? After years of restoration, the house in which he was born once again opens its doors to the public, transformed into a museum, from Wednesday to Sunday, 2pm to 6pm. Listed as a Monument Historique and a"Maison des Illustres", the house, where the composer's father ran an earthenware business, dates back to the 17th century.
After his death in 1918, it became a meeting place for his fans, and now houses the Ducastel-Vera municipal museum and the musician's museum. After passing through a pretty little inner courtyard and a superb decorated wooden staircase, we discover the story of Debussy and his little family, in particular his daughter whom he loved so much, through numerous photographs, scores and a first-person scenography that immerses us in his creative process.
This immersive setting retraces his great compositions and his contribution to the history of classical music. Although the museum is not very large, the second room in particular allows visitors to immerse themselves in the musician's world and imagine his daily life, thanks to objects from all over the world. Along the way, visitors can interact with the content to learn more about Claude Debussy's work.
Music lovers, don't miss the Debussy musical season, sponsored by Lithuanian pianist Mūza Rubackytė, for concerts throughout the year, and soon you'll be able to take advantage of a documentation center on the third floor of the house, with numerous works on the composer.
