Here's a museum that's sure to please all chocolate-lovers. Young and old alike, come and discover Choco-Story Paris, the chocolate museum. Located in the 10th arrondissement of Paris, this fun and educational museum invites you to learn more about chocolate, its history, the beliefs that surround it, and the whole industry that has been built around this product.
The museum's permanent tour is divided into three themes. First, we discover the origins of chocolate, the cultivation of cocoa in the pre-Columbian civilizations of Latin America, and the myths and legends surrounding this very special bean. Currency of exchange, food of the gods, gift of the god Quetzalcoatl to mankind... The collections take us on a journey to learn more about the Mayan and Aztec civilizations. We can admire various ancient objects used to harvest cocoa and prepare chocolate, bowls, religious statues...
The second chapter tells the story of how chocolate conqueredEurope: Spanish colonization, European monarchs with a sweet tooth, fashions, therapeutic properties... Chocolate quickly found its place in Western society. This part of the tour also looks at the industrial production of chocolate: machines, molds, advertising posters... Several audiovisual devices and interactive points help young visitors to better understand this epic story.
Finally, head for the museum's third area to discover the less... conventional, but far more spectacular uses of chocolate. Here, art and gastronomy become one, and we discover the breathtaking sculptures and creations of master chocolatiers. A virtual kitchen even offers a short pastry-making course, to teach you how to make beautiful chocolates.
If you'd like to get hands-on, don't worry: the museum regularly offers workshops open to children and adults alike. Under the guidance of an experienced chef, create your own confectionery and chocolate bars. A fun and instructive experience for chocolate aficionados. Regularly throughout the year, special workshops are offered to the public.
Navigating through this gourmet universe can quickly make you hungry. Fortunately, chocolate vending machines are set up all along the tour, allowing visitors to taste chocolates from different eras and cultures, and better understand their differences. A number of chocolate recipes are also provided: adventurers of taste can try their hand at reproducing these pre-Columbian or European beverages.
Choco-Story is open daily from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m., and closed on January 1 and December 25 each year. Prices range from €15 to €9, depending on the visitor's age. For workshops, the price rises to 40 euros. Reservations are not compulsory, but are recommended during school vacations and busy periods, especially for hands-on workshops. There's also a souvenir store where you can take home a few sweet treats to satisfy your hunger.
For children's enjoyment, the Musée du Chocolat also offers an educational trail (with a treasure hunt in the collections), and a workshop for birthday parties.
To get to the museum, get off at Strasbourg-Saint-Denis (lines 4, 8 or 9) or Bonne Nouvelle (lines 8 or 9). Choco-Story Paris is waiting for you!
