In the 19th century, Bourron-Marlotte attracted many artists. The alliance of the villages of Bourron and Marlotte, with its unique central town hall, saw painters such as Corot, Renoir, Monet, Cézanne and Pissarro mingle with local life. They were attracted by the unique light, picturesque landscapes and bohemian atmosphere. Traces of their stay are still visible, notably in the stained-glass windows of artists' studios, and in the plaques documented on their homes.
Here's an overview of the treasures you can discover:
Today, many artists continue to be attracted to Bourron-Marlotte as part of a living cultural tradition.
If history fascinates you, Bourron-Marlotte also has deep roots. Prehistoric, Roman and medieval remains attest to millennia of human occupation. Today's château replaced a medieval fortress, and local lords welcomed kings such as Louis IX.
When it comes to eating out, the town of Bourron-Marlotte is not to be outdone, as it is home to some very good restaurants. Between the gastronomic restaurant Les Prémices in the château's stables, the historic Café de la Paix in the town center, the traditional Bistrot du Broc and the excellent new restaurant La Papote, which we loved to try out on its lovely green terrace, there's plenty to enjoy. Formerly the "Auberge de la mère d'Antony", this place was home to Corot, Sisley, Renoir, Cézanne, Monet and Pissaro, as well as writers such as Théophile Gautier and Alfred and Paul de Musset. Émile Zola wrote "L'Assommoir" here, while Auguste Renoir painted his picture "Le cabaret de la mère Antony". A real place to live, this convivial restaurant combines old-world charm with fine dishes based on seasonal produce and a fine wine list. Don't forget to make reservations, as these restaurants are quickly snapped up.
