From the street, at 29 rue de Babylone, it's impossible to see this hidden garden, which gives the impression of entering a building courtyard. The Jardin Catherine Labouré is a 7,000 m2 former nunnery orchard. Lawns, a playground and fruit trees now form the backdrop to a space open to all.
The Catherine Labouré Garden takes its name from a young nun who is said to have had apparitions of the Virgin Mary in the 19th century in the chapel adjoining the garden, now known as the Chapel of the Miraculous Medal. The garden was donated by the Daughters of Charity under an agreement signed in 1977.
There are beautiful green lawns, and a small educational vegetable garden where children from neighboring schools can learn about the joys of gardening. An avenue of vines, apple trees and fruit trees complete the decor.
Since 2000, the garden has also provided access to the former Jardin du Potager de l'hospice des Incurables, now known as Hôpital Laennec. A wide area of paths and lawns, cherry trees and other flowering shrubs reveal themselves to us.
