Some places are steeped in history. Such is the case of theAuberge Ravoux, known as " Van Gogh's House " and listed as a historic monument. For it was here, in the heart of the sumptuous village ofAuvers-sur-Oise in the Val-d'Oise, that the famous painter rented a room, No. 5, in May 1890. At the time, the room cost just 3.50 francs a day, according to the official website.
The Dutch painter remained in this small room in the inn, lit by a single skylight, until his death on July 29, 1890. Since September 17, 1993, and after twenty months of renovation work, the Auberge Ravoux has welcomed all Van Gogh enthusiasts, as well as the curious, eager to discover this symbolic place steeped in history. " The Auberge Ravoux is one of the few houses where Van Gogh lived that has survived intact to the present day," states the official website of the Maison de Van Gogh.
But the Auberge Ravoux is not open all year round. Proud to show visitors Van Gogh's last home, the Auberge Ravoux is only open for around 10 months of the year. For this 2024 season, it is possible to push open the doors of the Auberge Ravoux from March 1 until November 24.
An opportunity to discover the painter's famous 7m² room on the second floor of the Auberge. But be warned: access is deliberately restricted. In order to preserve the intimacy of the site and offer the curious a truly immersive experience, organized tours for small groups are offered from Wednesday to Sunday, 10am to 6pm.
On the first floor, the Auberge Ravoux unveils its famous dining room, where no more than 10 tables are arranged in a unique, authentic setting. According to reports, the painter was a regular here, occupying a table at the back of the room. Here, simplicity is the order of the day, with charcuterie and/or cheese boards served continuously and accompanied by a glass of wine. It's a spirit that appeals to visiting gourmets, who are happy to travel back in time for a moment. The Auberge Ravoux, a former wine shop and restaurant since 1876, has retained its old-fashioned artist's café decor.
And after your stay at theAuberge Ravoux, why not visit the village of Auvers-sur-Oise, just 30 kilometers from Paris, known as a Mecca of Impressionism? While Auvers-sur-Oise was obviously marked by the presence of painter Vincent Van Gogh, this small Val-d'Oise commune was also marked by the imprint of Pissarro, Daubigny, Cézanne and Corot.
