Both Alaïa and Elgort shaped the freedom of the 1980s, helping to renew the image of the woman as assertive and independent. Their work dusted off fashion photography, desacralizing designer clothes and making the world of luxury more accessible.
The two artists had similar histories: each originally aspired to a different future, Arthur Elgort to painting and Azzedine Alaïa to sculpture. But fate had other plans! The young Azzedine was fed up with being relegated to the background and decided to leave his native Tunisia for Paris in the 1950s. He was quick to use women's bodies as his new medium, shaping his style through contact with his privileged clients and the beauties in his entourage. As for Arthur, he discovered the art of photography through his first Polaroid, bought in a New York store in the 1960s. He later exchanged it for a Nikon, and was also interested in experimenting with techniques and discovering the idiosyncrasies of other types of cameras, both old and new. Elgort was then spotted by the great director of Vogue publications, Alexander Liberman, and worked alongside the famous editor Grace Coddington.
At the height of their careers, the two talented designers finally met in Paris. Azzedine Alaïa was particularly attracted to Arthur Elgort's casual yet rigorous style. Gone were the days of standardized model breaks in magazines! The photographer conveysinstantaneity through his black and white images, offering joyful, lively shots. From then on, fashion imagery played with light and took to the streets.
The faces of this revival are the famous models Linda Spierings, Jeny Howarth, Janice Dickinson, Bonnie Berman, Veronica Webb, Frederique Van der Wal, Naomi Campbell, Christy Turlington, Cindy Crawford, Linda Evangelista and Stephanie Seymour, to be discovered throughout the exhibition.
