The Azzedine Alaïa Foundation returns on the designer’s career for an exhibition, “Alaïa afore Alaïa”, running until December 31, 2022. Run to the Marais-based gallery to discover the retrospective about designer Azzedine Alaïa, from his training years at Tunis School of Fine Arts, to his moving to Paris in 1950, and until his first successes in the early 1980’s.
The exhibition paints the portrait of a designer as talented as modest. As others were striving to improve their techniques in prestigious fashion schools, workshops or studios, Azzedine created his style thanks to the women in his entourage and privileged customers. From his sister Hafida to his confident Latifa, from Leila Menchari to Nicole de Blégiers, he became friends with his venerated muses.
For the thirty years after he moved to the French capital city, Azzedine Alaïa spent time with the most prominent female like Greta Garbo, Arletty and even Louis de Vilmorin. Meetings that propelled him in the limelight of Paris and upper society. The transition from Alaïa “to” Alaïa has begun!
From this moment on, orders pile up in his apartment-studio set rue Bellechasse. The designer creates models and experiences, like a relentless workaholic. His famous is such that fashion pioneers have every confidence in him. Everybody wants Alaïa now!
Under the leadership of Olivier Saillard, the exhibition gathers rare archives mixing stories, photographs and fashion pieces. A well-made and moving exhibition where a few creations from the designer’s debuts dialog with iconic and sculptural pieces, whilst, under the glass roof of the Foundation, are displayed portraits of his great friendships and loyal admirers.
A genuine tribute to the designer who created and exalted women’s bodies!
