Frequented by pedestrians, cyclists and scooter owners, the Tuileries Tunnel was considered dark and sad by those who used it. But for two weeks, a dozen French and foreign artists have been working to transform this underground passage into a real work of art, filled with colors and large frescoes inspired by the capital, visible by the curious until July 2023.
As of July 11, street art works began to cover the860-meter-long underground that leads to the Georges-Pompidou Way. Previously accessible to cars, this tunnel is since 2016 reserved for soft mobility. With the Concorde underground, which also houses a bike path, bicycles can reach the Champs-Elysées while avoiding traffic jams and some dangers. A bit worrying, the tunnel was until now only lit by pale lamps, and there were always blackened walls and old ventilation turbines out of order.
All these colorful frescoes are going to give back some pep to the place and make it more lively, for the pleasure of the Parisians who walk through it every day. The artists are inspired by the directParisian environment of the tunnel, between the Seine, the Louvre, the Jardin des Tuileries, but also the Olympic Games or the Parisian subway, to be discovered until July 2023 for free. Among them are the street artists Andrea Ravo Mattoni, Bault, Erell, Hydrane, Jussi TwoSeven, Lek & Sowat, Madame, Romain Froquet, Sifat or WAR! Other unofficial works have been added over the days, for an even greater graphic diversity. An unusual project, in partnership between the city of Paris and Nicolas Laugero Lasserre, artistic director of the project.
