Electric scooters: new rules implemented from July 1, 2020

If you are used to ride electric scooters, you should know that new rules are implemented from July 1, 2020. Mandatory audible warning, mandatory brake system, or even mandatory front and rear position lamps… we tell you everything.

Electric scooters, electric unicycles, electric skates… for several years now, these personal mobility devices or PMD have taken over streets in big cities. If you are one of the many fans of electric scooters, note that new rules have been implemented on July 1, 2020.

Therefore, electric scooters now must be fitted with front and rear position lamps, as well as retro-reflection devices (reflectors), and last but not least a braking system and an audible warning. In case these new rules are broken, the offender may be fined €11 for lack of “effective braking” and €35 for lack of lights or audible warning. We remind you if you drive on a sidewalk, you may be fined up to €135.

 We also remind you the different traffic rules for these PMDs:

  • It is not allowed to wear earphones or any device likely to play a sound, or use your phone if you hold it,
  • People under 12 years old are not allowed to drive a PMD,
  • Not over one person on the device,
  • It is banned to drive if intoxicated,
  • In cities, it is mandatory to drive on bicycle lanes when there are some,
  • Outside cities, you can only drive on green lanes and bicycle lanes.
