When will the coronavirus epidemic be over? Marking 2020, the health crisis led to the lockdown of half of the world population and could end sooner than expected. In a press conference held this Friday August 21, 2020, World Health Organization (WHO) director general Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus said he hopes the pandemic could be halted “in a shorter time than the 1918 flu”, referring to the Spanish flu.
This health crisis started by the end of the First World War and last about two years, from 1918 to 1920. As for Covid-19, Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus says the virus is more likely to spread, reminding that we have better technologies than in the previous century. WHO hopes the epidemic could be halted in under two years “If we can pool all our efforts […] and utilizing the available tools to the maximum and hoping that we can have additional tools like vaccines”. In the event of the Spanish flu, the epidemic would have disappeared spontaneously.
