Tired of seeing litter littering the streets of Paris? Well, on September 20, 2024, it's World Cleanup Day, a day that invites you to pick up any litter you see in order to clean up an area. Join in the action and make a one-day commitment to protecting the environment. Events are being organized all over the Île-de-France region, so all you have to do is join the one nearest you, as indicated on the event map!
Equipped with gloves, tweezers, garbage can bags and a map, volunteers will set off in search of the garbage that pollutes our streets and collect it, to restore cleanliness to gardens, parks and communal spaces. Masks, bottles, cigarette butts, paper, bags... This plastic waste adds up to some nine million tonnes of garbage dumped into the seas and oceans every year, or 285 kilos per second.
80% of this pollution originates on land and is transported to the oceans by rivers. If nothing is done to stem this flow, scientific studies predict that there will be as many plastics as fish in the oceans by 2050. That's why it's so important to take action and put waste in its proper place, i.e. in garbage cans, and to be vigilant on a daily basis.
Created in Estonia in 2007, this ecological movement has won over many organizations around the world. In 2023, 19 million people in 191 countries took part! In France, over 990 tonnes of waste were recovered, including 10 million discarded cigarette butts.
