It's a first in Paris, and even in France. At a time when some cult bookshops are seeing their future threatened, a new cultural address is opening its doors in the capital's 5th arrondissement with a novel concept. Welcome to Librairie Les Grands Caractères, the first literary spot dedicated to the visually impaired.
Freshly inaugurated, this address has opened its doors in the Latin Quarter, a stone's throw from the Pantheon. Here, literature lovers with various sight problems can finally find a remedy for the ailments that prevent them from enjoying their passion to the full. Les Grands Caractères have imagined a place "where low vision, dysfunction and cognitive difficulties go hand in hand with reading, the pleasure of reading and a love of books"
In all, the address offers a diverse selection of over 600 books "to be devoured from 13 to 133 years of age". Adapted for the visually impaired, these books are published in large print to make them easier to read. The address thus promises "books whose reading comfort is unequalled thanks to their adapted layouts. The fonts are sober and enlarged, the line spacing large, the contrast strong and the paper opaque". Librairie des Grands Caractères also makes magnifiers and low-vision lamps available to its customers.
A great initiative for the new year!
