This week, British magazine The Economist shared a study about the safest cities in the world. The study relies on 76 indicators in digital, health, infrastructures, environments, people’s security within cities.
So, which city in the world is the safest? The lucky winner is Copenhagen, Denmark, replacing Tokyo, Japan, that used to be the first since 2015. The Danish city reports the lowest criminality rate in the world, far ahead of Toronto and Singapore. Considered as the safest city in the U.S., New-York ranks 11th.
Paris is the 23rd safest city, which is not very reassuring, but still better than the Burman capital city. The latter, Yangon, is considered as the least safe city in the world, especially because of the violent protests following the coup. Karachi, Pakistan, Caracas, Venezuela and Lagos, Nigeria are not far behind.
Carried out for two years, the study shows the Asian-Pacific region is globally the safest, while the Middle-East gets very worrying results. The Covid-19 pandemic has been a game-changer as well since it “has changed the whole concept of urban safety”, especially as far as digital and infrastructure security is involved. To rank among the leaders for the coming years, big metropolises will have to adapt to the society’s changes, especially when it comes to the environment.
