Remember, in 2015, Parisians and tourists were waving goodbye at the love locks locked on the famous Pont des Arts. A decision that did not please everyone, but judged necessary by the municipality. “For the Pont des Arts only, 15 wire-meshed boards have been removed for safety reasons. Each of them carried about 500kg of locks, which is four times the limit load allowed”, then first deputy mayor Bruno Julliard explained.
But now, another Paris arrondissement has decided to tackle to the tradition of love locks and end it. According to BFM Paris, these metallic items locked on fences and barriers will be removed in Montmartre, by the Sacred Heart. The 18th arrondissement town hall explains the decision alluding to the “Embellir mon quartier” action. It consists in “re-evaluating everything that goes wrong in the Montmartre district”, the mayor explained to our peers from BFM Paris.
So far, no specific date has been given, but the love locks are to be removed from the iconic Paris district in 2023.
What will be the reactions of the 18th arrondissement inhabitants following this decision, and what about tourists’ vowing such unconditional love to the Butte Montmartre? And what could be the next Paris spot for lovebirds to seal their love with a lock? Tell us your prognosis!
