While everyone is familiar with the Surrealist movement and its male artists, female authors, painters and poets are far less represented in museum collections. From March 31 to September 10, 2023, the Musée de Montmartre will be representing these women artists in a feminist and committed exhibition. So we're taking advantage of the last few days to discover the exhibition!
Fifty of them are featured, with almost 150 works on display, transgressive in the image of thisleading 20th-centurymovement. Discover the feminine contribution of Claude Cahun, Jane Graverol, Dora Maar, Lee Miller, Grace Pailthorpe and Franciska Clausen, all of whom were overlooked by the art market and forgotten over time. While a few names will jump out at you, most of the women on show will be unfamiliar, despite their expressive, humorous works.
Female surrealism took shape between 1930 and 1970, thanks to friendships (or loves) between these artists, far removed from the considerations of male surrealists. Through drawing, photography, sculpture, literature and film, women wished to express their desire to go beyond heterosexual norms, clichés and boundaries. A fascinating world tour of the movement, from Mexico to England and France, for a vast panorama of this surrealist and profoundly feminist creativity.
Seven themes areevoked: metamorphosis, nature, seduction and plural femininity, chimeras, architecture, innernightsand abstractions, in the heart of Montmartre, a district particularly appreciated by the Surrealists, who always found something to dream about. This is your chance to explore the same places as these artists in their time, and enjoy the marvellous Renoir Gardens, far from the hustle and bustle of the city!
