There are thousands of them, Steven Spielberg even made a movie about them. The war horses, enlisted by force to serve as mounts for soldiers and who died on the battlefield for the majority of them, will be celebrated in Paris. At a date still unknown in 2023, a commemorative plaque, in memory of all these horses who died for France, will be inaugurated on one of the gates of the Buttes-Chaumont park, in the 19th arrondissement.
On this plaque, one will be able to read the following: "Near this place, in 1914, the horses of the district were gathered by requisition order to go to the front. Enrolled in spite of themselves, they also paid a heavy price. Let us not forget them." This is not the first plaque of its kind, there is also one in the 11th arrondissement. It is estimated that 8 million horses were forcibly conscripted around the world during the First World War.
