Exhibitions about ancient Egypt have a habit of fascinating a large part of the public, whether novice or enthusiast. From April 7 to September 10, the Grande Halle de la Villette hosted the incredible " Ramses & the Gold of the Pharaohs " exhibition, presented by the Supreme Council of Egyptian Antiquities and World Heritage Exhibitions.
This fabulous installation, dedicated to Ramses II, took visitors on a 5-month journey, unveiling 181 exceptional artefacts from the age of the Pharaohs. Visitors who were lucky enough to push open the doors of the Grande Halle de la Villette to discover " Ramses and the Gold of the Pharaohs " were also able to admire animal sarcophagi and mummies, jewelry (necklaces, pendants, bracelets, etc.), royal masks, amulets and statues, not forgetting the centerpiece: the pharaoh's painted cedarwood sarcophagus. The coffin of Ramses II was exceptionally loaned to France, even though it had not left Egypt for 45 years!
So, how many visitors did the " Ramses and the Gold of the Pharaohs " installation attract? Did it do better than " Tutankhamun, the Pharaoh's Treasure " , which will be presented in Paris in 2019?
In a press release published on September 12, the organizers reveal that the " Ramses and the Gold of the Pharaohs " exhibition has attracted exactly 817,036 visitors since it opened on April 7. In fact, 50% of visitors were from the Paris region, while 117 nationalities were counted, including Belgians, Swiss, Germans and Americans.
With over 800,000 visitors, the Ramses II exhibition did not dethrone that devoted to Tutankhamun. In 2019, " Tutankhamun, the Pharaoh's Treasure " attracted 1.42 million visitors, an all-time record!
