Paris pays tribute to David Bowie, the legendary British artist who died on January 10, 2016 at the age of 69. While a street named after him is due to be inaugurated in the capital on Monday, January 8, 2024, the Mairie du 13e arrondissement has announced a concert in tribute to the flamboyant Ziggy Stardust, as well as a free exhibition.

Almost eight years after David Bowie's death, the British artist's countless hits continue to resonate in our heads to this day. On January 10, 2016, the musician and singer left us at the age of 69, leaving behind an inconsolable community of fans. While David Bowie has had his star on London's Camden Music Walk of Fame since 2022, and the British capital will host an art center dedicated to the artist in 2025, Paris too plans to pay tribute to the rock icon.

Announced by Jérôme Coumet, Mayor of the 13th arrondissement, then confirmed at the Paris Council meeting on February 3, 2020, rue David Bowie is finally set to be inaugurated in the capital. On January 8, David Bowie's birthday, the City of Paris will honor the legendary artist by naming a street after him in the 13th arrondissement, at N°61 avenue Mendès France.

Some may not know it, but it was in Paris in 1965 that David Bowie, then aged 18, made his first appearance outside the UK. That year, with his band The Lower Third, the British artist took over the Golf-Drouot venue, considered at the time to be the " Temple of Rock ".

" Proud of this long-standing link with the artist, the City of Paris is continuing this legacy by inaugurating a rue David Bowie in the capital's 13th arrondissement, eight years after his death," announced the City of Paris in a press release published on January 3.

To mark the inauguration of this David Bowie street in Paris, the 13th arrondissement town hall is organizing a special evening in tribute to the artist in its Salle des fêtes on Monday January 8, 2024. Open free of charge from 7pm, the evening will be hosted by Jérôme Soligny and feature a concert by Clifford Slapper.

Finally, the Galerie Athéna, located within the Mairie du 13e arrondissement, is opening its doors to an exhibition dedicated to David Bowie. To be discovered free of charge from January 4 to 14, 2024, this installation was conceived and imagined by photographer Geoff MacCormack and painter George Underwood, both childhood friends of the artist.
