"Every January, for several years now, my sister and I have been sending each other photos of galette displays, a little disappointed by their limited availability in bakeries", explains one of the two founders of Galette toute l'année, an informal movement that hopes our famous frangipane can just as easily be enjoyed in April, October, March or the middle of July. "We didn't see why we couldn't have this delicacy all year round," confides the movement's founder, who admits she prefers the classic frangipane galette above all other versions. So, on January 5, 2024, the two sisters got together with a group of friends on the Place de la République, to go "sticker" some bakeries in the 10th, 11th and 19th arrondissements.
While the Galette des rois is available in Parisian bakeries and patisseries throughout January (and, for those of you in a hurry, some bakeries offer it for sale as early as the end of December), it's celebrated primarily onEpiphany Day, which falls on January 6 each year.
The idea of the Galette toute l'année collective was to turn the codes of the classic demonstration on their head and make a light-hearted demand, which was very well received in bakeries and on social networks. " Some bakers who saw our stickers the next morning contacted us to praise the initiative, and when the bakeries were open on the evening of January 5, many of the people who work there thought our demand was a great idea." Indeed, the galette des rois period is one of the busiest times of the year for bakers and patissiers: for some bakeries, this is when the biggest turnover of the year is achieved.
Obviously, the collective's actions are to be taken in the second degree: the stickers affixed to bakery windows can be peeled off without any effort at all, everything has been thought out to open an avenue of reflection for an Epiphany in the spring or perhaps even, in the summer, without harming anyone. For the future, the collective plans to hold another demonstration, "in March perhaps", with a possible "wild distribution of galettes" for all participants.
