You won't be able to find Pierrefitte-sur-Seine on a map any more, and for good reason: the Seine-Saint-Denis town isdue to disappearfrom the radar on January 1, 2025! But why should this charming town of 31,000 inhabitants be erased from the radar? Well, it's simply being swallowed up by the neighboring town of Saint-Denis, to form one huge commune, becoming the second largest in the Paris region after Paris!
It will, however, keep the name of Saint-Denis and will bring together 150,000 inhabitants, as decided on May 30, 2024 by the municipal council. An atypical merger, since the two towns are large, unlike small villages where this happens more often, which pleases the two Socialist mayors, Michel Fourcade and Mathieu Hanotin, who told AFP that "union does not necessarily make wealth but strength".
From now on, the latter will be mayor and first deputy mayor until the municipal elections of 2026, annoying the opposition, who deplore, among other things, the lack of consultation with the population. Technically, the name Pierrefitte-sur-Seine will not disappear entirely from the landscape, since the signs will remain, as will the postal code, but as a commune delegated to Saint-Denis.
