The year 2025 has barely begun, and we're still taking stock of 2024: this time, we're taking stock of traffic in the Paris region, which has cost local residents many hours in lost driving time.

Is Paris Europe's most congested city? If traffic jams are an integral part of everyday life in Paris and the Ile-de-France region, with a lot of congestion on the various ring roads, the traffic figures have just come in: on average, Parisians and Ile-de-France residents on the road lost more than 100 hours in traffic jams in 2024, according to theTomTom traffic index.

Surprisingly placed after Bordeaux (113 hours of traffic jams in 2024) in the ranking, Paris and its notorious traffic jams amount to over 100 hours (101 hours to be exact) in 2024. A 30% increase in congestion compared with 2023, according to the TomTom traffic index.

However, this figure is debatable, since thetraffic index of the Inrix application puts the number of hours of traffic jams in Paris at 97 hours in 2024, based on data collected from users' smartphones. This time, Paris ranks 6th among the world's most congested cities, behind Istanbul (105 hours lost in 2024), New York (102 hours), Chicago (102 hours), Mexico City (97 hours) and London (101 hours).

Regardless of the road traffic index used in Paris, Parisians are still the biggest losers in this game, with almost four full days lost to traffic jams in 2024.
