He’s known to everyone! Always wearing a sparkly blue suit and blue glasses, Michou is one of the most emblematic character in Montmartre. His cabaret is filled with cross-dressed artists and is a go-to in Paris: recommended in guide books, sold-out every evening, it triggered our curiosity and we (finally) paid it a visit in 2015.
Everything starts at 8:15 p.m., when the doors open. About a hundred people hurry inside to the corridor covered in pictures of celebrities and leading to the theater, also doubling up as restaurant. The tone is set: tonight will be glamor or not! Michou is here, all smiles, he calls out to guests and jokes around. At almost 85, he’s so full of energy it’s almost intimidating… but here, everyone has to be at ease! Proof of it with the large and collective tables where guests are crammed in like sardines (only big flaw of the cabaret, here, elbowing your way through is very meaningful: you better not be agoraphobic).
On the menu, starter-main course-dessert including French specialties (sausage from Lyon, flamiche from Picardie, veal mignon, Brie de Meaux…) served with a bottle of wine or champagne. The food is good and friendly, but we’re not here for the food.
10:30 p.m., the show begins, and brace yourself because your zygomas will be painful! Such joy with this French and international song overview (Mireille Mathieu, Céline Dion, Line Renaud, Aznavour, as well as Stromae! Grace Jones, Cher and Diana Ross), performed live or lip synced by the cross-dressed Michettes.
Splendidly made up and dressed up, the Michettes are all glitters and fantasy: we fall in love with the completely accepted kitsch of this fantastic cabaret. We’d gladly stay all night dancing with Michou’s artists but everything has to end; anyway, we’ll be back!
