At the grand opening ceremony of the Paris 2024 Olympic Games, theOlympic Refugee Team paraded - or rather, sailed - aboard a boat that hoisted high the Olympic flag, adorned with the 5 rings on a white background. Created in 2016, during the Rio Olympic Games, the Refugee Team is an initiative of the International Olympic Committee (IOC), dedicated to supporting refugee athletes in their sporting ambitions.

At the United Nations General Assembly in October 2015, IOC President Thomas Bach announced the creation of this unique, multicultural team, enabling top-level athletes who have had to flee their home countries and adopt refugee status, to compete in their turn at the Games. In 2016, the Refugee Olympic Team included 10 athletes, while at the Tokyo Games in 2021, 29 top-level athletes were part of the team. This year, for the Paris 2024 Olympic Games, the Olympic team includes 37 athletes, competing in 12 different sports.

How can I join the Refugee Olympic Team?

Each athlete must be a top-level athlete in his or her respective discipline and have refugee status (recognized by UNCHR, the United Nations refugee agency) in their host country.

Among the athletes who were part of the refugee Olympic team was Yusra Mardini, known for having fled her native Syria with her sister Sarah: although she didn't win a medal, she nevertheless became flag-bearer for the refugee Olympic team at the Tokyo Games in 2021, and is the subject of a biopic (Les Nageuses, by Sally el Hosaini), about her story.

At the Tokyo 2021 Games, the Olympic refugee team did not win a medal, and its special status as a team representing no specific country means that it does not feature in the rankings by nation.
