It was one of the highlights of the opening ceremony of the Paris 2024 Olympic Games : singer Lady Gaga performing Zizi Jenmaire 'sMon truc en plumes with a group of dancers, at the foot of a gold-colored staircase (a nod to the most prestigious of Olympic medals?).
If the performance was particularly well received, from the costumes to the choice of music and the huge pink pompons lent by the Parisian cabaret Lido before it closed, it's because the venue was also particularly well chosen. Located on the banks of the Seine in the heart of the capital, Square Barye is a small, triangular-shaped park at the tip of Ile Saint-Louis.
Laid out in 1938, Square Barye bears the name of animal sculptor Antoine-Louis Barye, who created two bronzes, Thésée terrassant le centaure Bienor and le Lion au serpent, which are on display in the square. Cast during the German occupation for use in armaments, the statues were reproduced identically and now once again feature in the square. The site also boasts a number of fine tree species, including paulownias, weeping elms, a cedar of Lebanon and Irish yews... And offers a unique view of the Seine and the city, from the tip of the Île Saint-Louis.
If you'd like to discover this pretty, bucolic spot by the water, Square Barye is open every day, all year round, 24 hours a day. To get there, take line 1 (Bastille stop), line 7 (Sully-Morland stop), line 5 (Bastille stop) or line 10 (Jussieu stop). How do I get there?
