Just moments after Léon Marchand set a new French record in the 200 m butterfly and picked up another gold medal in the process (!!), another French record was broken by 8 seconds by swimmer Anastasiia Kirpichnikova in the 1500 m freestyle. What a day for French swimming!
The Russian-born Frenchwoman took a well-deserved silver medal at the same time, in an intense race led by American legend Katie Ledecky, who took Olympic gold. This is the eighth gold medal for the American athlete, who smashed her own record with a time of 15:30.02.
And the day isn't over yet! Léon Marchand still has a gold medal to go, as he prepares to compete in the 200 m breaststroke in just a few minutes' time. While Anastasiia Kirpichnikova has just won the 3rd medal of the Paris 2024 Olympic Games for French swimming and the 25th medal for Equipe de France, the little prince of swimming could win a 26th before the end of this 5th day of competition.
