He's unstoppable. Three days after a sublime gold medal in the 400m 4-swim - his preferred discipline - Léon Marchand added a new gold medal to his trophy cabinet, snatched from the finish line of the 200m butterfly event on the evening of Wednesday July 31.
In a boiling hot arena, the greatest hope of French swimming was able to rely on his athletic performances, in particular his otherworldly flow, to come back in the last third and even the final meters of the race on the man who was only half a length ahead of him, his greatest adversary, Hungary's Kristóf Milák.
The Hungarian finished in second place, taking Silver, followed by Canada's Ilya Kharun in Bronze. But the evening didn't end there for Léon Marchand ! The little prince of French swimming also picked up a new and third Olympic gold medal in the 200 m breaststroke event.
Greeted by a standing ovation from the audience, the tension was at its height, and the athlete was able, once again, to surpass himself to take first place on the podium and win the gold medal, ahead of Australia's Izaac Stubblety-Cook and the Netherlands' Caspar Corbeau, allowing France to move into first place on the world medal table!
