"It's been a dream since I was a kid". Léon Marchand was hoping for an Olympic title, and now he has it! Even better, it's not likely to be his last, as the young Frenchman is also competing in the 200m butterfly, 200m breaststroke and 200m 4-swim. On Sunday evening, in his favorite discipline, the 400m 4-swim, Léon Marchand made short work of his rivals, winning gold with ease, surrounded by an enthusiastic crowd at the Paris La Défense Arena.
World record-holder in this discipline and five-time world champion, the 22-year-old swimmer simply flew through his final, with a lead of 5.57 seconds and a new Olympic record of 4'02"95, knocking Michael Phelps off his perch. The second gold medal of the day, and the third of these Olympic Games on home soil, a superb harvest for the start of the competition!
And it's far from over for French swimming! We may have to get used to hearing the Marseillaise over the next few days...
