If you follow swimming events, then this detail has surely jumped out at you. Before the start of each race in the pool, many athletes arrive bundled up in a long down jacket. But why? We'll explain.

Since July 27, the Paris La Défense Arena has been hosting the swimming events in front of an enthusiastic public. While many await Florent Manaudou's entry into the competition, French fans are already smiling, thanks in particular to the phenomenon Léon Marchand. While the show is obviously on in the pool, some spectators and TV viewers have noticed a strange habit among some of the athletes. Before the race, several of them arrive around the pool wrapped up in a long down jacket. So, is it really that cold at the Paris La Défense Arena? Why do Olympic swimmers dress so warmly just before the race?

In fact, this down jacket simply keeps athletes warm. This is because, before entering the pool, they have to wait several minutes in a so-called"call room". They then leave this room to enter the pool and compete. But during this short phase, swimmers are exposed to air currents. So, to ensure that their muscles retain the warmth acquired during the warm-up period, many athletes choose to don a down jacket to keep warm.

Because warmth is good for athletes; in particular, it facilitates vasodilation. Wearing a down jacket promotes blood circulation. As a result, swimmers can enter the pool in top condition and excel in their bid for a title at the Paris 2024 Olympic Games!
