What a magnificent gift they gave us this Saturday, August 3, 2024: the French judokas gave us another gold medal, creating euphoria at the Arena Champ-de-Mars. Teddy Riner, Romane Dicko, Maxime-Gaël Ngayap Hambou, Sarah Léonie Cysique, Joan-Benjamin Gaba and Clarisse Agbegnenou won their mixed team judo final against Japan, formidable opponents in this sport.
On the tatami and in the Olympic venue, the tension was palpable. It was a summit meeting between the two teams on Saturday afternoon. France, the reigning Olympic champions in this discipline, faced Japan again in the final, in a repeat of the battle that took place at the Tokyo Games in 2021. Judo's two titans regularly go head-to-head, each vying for the crown.
After a few disappointments in the individual competitions for Romane Dicko and Clarisse Agbegnenou, and after Teddy Riner 's extraordinary victory the day before, the French team was more than ready to grab that gold medal.
What a day for France: after two medals in shooting and archery, French judo added a 39th medal to our list of achievements. We're now waiting for the French swimmers to take the podium this Saturday evening, so that our happiness is complete.
