She was aiming for gold. In the end, it was bronze. This Tuesday, July 30, 2024, Clarisse Agbégnénou unfortunately failed to win a second consecutive Olympic title in her -63kg category. But the French judoka can console herself with a bronze medal, won against Austria's Lubjana Piovesana.

Bronze for Clarisse Agbégnénou! The French judoka, who was defending her Olympic title obtained in 2021 at the Tokyo Olympics, finally picked up a bronze medal this Tuesday, July 30, 2024 at the Arena Champ-de-Mars.

After her victory over Austria's Lubjana Piovesana, Clarisse Agbégnénou joined her nearest and dearest in the stands to thunderous applause. The judoka also offered a beautiful image, hugging her daughter Athéna, born in 2022.

Clarisse Agbégnénou, who was aiming for gold, made no secret of her disappointment on France 2. "It's hard to swallow," she confided. "I'll be blaming myself for a long time for this situation, which cost me my final," continued the judoka. "It'shard to settle for what we've got here, but I'll savor it" she assured. Yes, the judoka can be proud of her victory.

It all began for the French athlete in the morning against Israel's Gili Sharir. Thanks to a waza-ari, the Frenchwoman prevailed and thus reached the 1/8th finals. Clarisse Agbégnénou then won her bout against Brazilian Ketleyn Quadros. Then, in the quarter-finals, she literally dispatched Kosovar Laura Fazliu with an express ippon in just 34 seconds.

While Clarisse Agbégnénou was hoping to reach the final and win another Olympic title, Slovenia's Andreja Leski shattered the Frenchwoman's dreams in the semi-final.

Supported by the French public at the Arena Champ-de-Mars, Clarisse Agbégnénou redoubled her efforts to finally defeat Austria's Lubjana Piovesana on Tuesday and win a bronze medal. The judoka will be back on the tatami this Saturday for the team bouts.

Since July 27, France's judo athletes have been outdoing themselves at the Paris 2024 Olympic Games. So far, three bronze medals have been won by Shirine Boukli (-48kg), Amandine Buchard (-52kg) and Sarah-Léonie Cysique (-57kg), and two silver medals by Luka Mkheidze (-60kg) and Joan-Benjamin Gaba (-73kg). Clarisse Agbégnénou also won bronze.

We hope that this shower of French judo medals will continue with Romane Dicko and Teddy Riner!
