How beautiful judo has been since the start of the Paris 2024 Olympic Games! After silver for Luka Mkheidze (-60kg), bronze for Amandine Buchard (-52kg), bronze for Shirine Boukli (-48kg), and moments before Joan-Benjamin Gaba took silver, Sarah-Léonie Cysique took bronze, in the -57kg category!
This time, there was no silver medal for the Frenchwoman - who won it at the Tokyo Games - but a third-place finish. After an interminable semi-final defeat by Canada's Christa Deguchi in the -57 kg category on Monday July 29, 2024, Sarah-Léonie Cysique put up a short but intense fight against Georgia's Eteri Liparteliani to claim bronze.
Interviewed by France Télévisions, the26-year-old athlete was in tears ("of joy"!), declaring: "It was really hard because I saw a dream crumble, I knew I wouldn't be a gold medallist in Paris even though I'd come for this. I'm back with a medal in Paris, here, at home, with the French public cheering me on, cheering me on in front of my family and the French judo team, it's incredible."
Let's not forget the day'sother great French victory in judo: that of judoka Joan-Benjamin Gaba, who took the silver medal against the reigning world champion.
