The Olympic Games are in full swing, and spectators the world over are keeping a close eye on the countries' overall rankings, as the athletes' exploits unfold. But how is this ranking calculated?

The Paris 2024 Olympic Games see one sporting feat after another as athletes give their all during events to bring home a piece of the Eiffel Tower. Each day is marked by highlights, between historic and moving moments as the athletes who come to defend their colors write their own history and mark that of their respective nations. The various participating countries win gold, silver and bronze medals as the competition progresses, and these awards contribute to the overall ranking. And how is the overall ranking calculated?

And no, the country that comes out on top is not necessarily the one with the most medals. In fact, it's the gold medals that come first. The country with the most gold medals takes first place in the ranking. In the event of a tie, the silver medal count is used. In the event of a tie, the bronze medals are used to decide the winner.

It should be noted, however, that this ranking, revealed for information purposes, is not originally the subject of the Olympic Games, according to the Olympic Charter of the International Olympic Committee (IOC). As Pierre de Coubertin, who founded the Modern Olympic Games in 1899, put it:"The Olympic Games are competitions between athletes, in individual or team events, and not between countries".
