Who said theaters were dead? Since its release, Avatar: The Way of the Water has been breaking all post-Covid records and has just become the biggest box-office success of 2022 in France. And this, in only 15 days of exploitation. In nearly three months, Top Gun: Maverick had attracted nearly 6.8 million spectators in theaters, Avatar 2 has just pulverized this record. Internationally, it has also surpassed the $1 billion mark in revenue. It is not yet the biggest success of the year worldwide, but it is approaching it very quickly. The sequel to Top Gun took in just under $1.5 billion during its run.
As a reminder, the first part of Avatar is still to this day the biggest success in the history of cinema. In France, it had achieved nearly 14.6 million admissions, 15.2 if we count the re-releases of 2010 and 2022. It remains to be seen if The Way of the Water will beat this record as well.
