Avatar, The Way of the Water has broken multiple records, especially since the beginning of the pandemic. But it has just beaten its very first actual record in the history of cinema. In France, the third most lucrative market in the world for James Cameron's film, it has become the highest grossing feature film in history. 136.8 million euros. However, its number of admissions, 13.4 million, is far from that of Titanic (20.63 million), Intouchables (19.49 million) or Bienvenue chez les Ch'tis (20.48 million). So how is this possible?
It is simply due to the way the film is seen in France. For 3D screenings, as well as those in so-called Premium theaters (Dolby, 4DX etc.), the price of the ticket is increased. As Avatar was mostly seen in ideal conditions, the ticket price to see this film was higher than any other. That's why it made much more money than films with much higher attendance.
In fact, Avatar 2 may have been released in December, but its career in theaters is far from over, and the film could still very well reach 14 or even 15 million tickets by the end of its run.
