Facing the sea: the story of Trudy Ederle, the new Disney film due on Disney+ from July 19, 2024, brings to life the true story of the first woman to swim the English Channel in 1926. On the eve of the Paris Olympic Games, this is an opportunity to discover a film centered on sport and surpassing oneself, but also to learn about the remarkable story of Gertrude "Trudy" Ederle.
Directed by Joachim Rooning and produced by Disney and Jerry Bruckheimer Film, Face the Sea: The Trudy Ederle Story is based on Glen Stout 's book Young Woman and the Sea: How Trudy Ederle Conquered the English Channel and Inspired the World.
At the age of 20, Gertrude Trudy Ederle, played by Daisy Ridley, won the gold medal at the 1924 Olympic Games. Two years later, she set her sights on a challenge that no woman had yet achieved: to swim the English Channel. By 1926, five men had already succeeded, and Gertrude wanted to try her luck at swimming the 40km between Cap de Gris-Nez in France and Kingsdom in England. From her physical preparation to the search for financial support, we discover the road Gertrude "Trudy" Ederle had to travel. She completed the crossing in 14 hours and 39 minutes, accompanied by three tugboats, and in a two-piece swimsuit, which shocked the press at the time, as until then, women had worn one-piece swimsuits in competition.
Acclaimed by two million people on her arrival and considered a feminist figure, she was the first woman to be inducted into theInternational Swimming Hall of Fame.
The film shares Gertrude "Trudy" Ederle 's touching and courageous resilience in meeting this challenge. A real battle at the beginning of the 20th century, when no one could believe, or refused to believe, that a woman could beat a man's swimming record.
Facing the Sea: the story of Trudy Ederle, starring the gorgeous Daisy Ridler best known for her role as Rey in Star Wars, will be available on Disney+ from July 19, 2024.
