Bad news for triathletes and spectators hoping to watch the triathlon events this Tuesday morning, July 30. Due to poor water quality in the Seine, the men's triathlon event has been postponed to Wednesday, July 31, 2024. It will take place from 10.45am, after the women's event, scheduled for 8am.
According to Le Parisien, the decision was taken on Monday night " in the presence of Paris 2024, representatives of World Triathlon (the international triathlon federation), the IOC, Météo France, the City of Paris and the Île-de-France regional prefecture ".
" Analyses carried out in the Seine today revealed water quality levels that did not offer sufficient guarantees to allow the event to go ahead," reveals the daily. Even though water quality has improved in recent hours, values recorded at certain points along the course remain " above acceptable limits ", it adds.
It was confirmed this Wednesday morning: the Seine has been deemed compliant and swimmable. Athletes will therefore be able to compete in the event on July 31.
What about tickets purchased to attend the event on Tuesday, July 30? "Tickets for this session will be automatically refunded by Paris 2024 to the original purchaser's bank account, without having to provide proof of purchase. This will be received within a maximum of 45 working days," said Paris 2024. "If, after this period, the original purchaser has not received a refund, he or she may contact the ticketing service. The refund amount will be automatically credited to the bank account used to purchase the tickets. Ticket holders have been contacted by Paris 2024."
Ticket holders will therefore be unable to attend the event this Wednesday. However, there's nothing to stop them coming to watch the athletes in the free, open-access sections. Ticket holders for the women's triathlon event also win the right to watch the men's part of the event afterwards.
55 triathletes are expected to take part, competing in swimming, cycling and running. A number of Frenchmen are expected to take part in the men's event, including Dorian Coninx, 2023 world champion, Léo Bergère and Pierre Le Corre. On the women's side, it's Cassandre Beaugrand, Léonie Périault and Emma Lombardi to watch.
