The world of cinema mourns the loss of a sacred monster of the silver screen! Donald Sutherland, an actor known for his roles in such cult films as The Dirty Dozen, MASH, Klute, Ordinary People and most recently The Hunger Games, and incidentally the father of Kiefer Sutherland, died on June 20, 2024 at the age of 88 in Miami, after a long illness.
Born in Saint John, Canada, Donald Sutherland began his career in the UK before making his mark in Hollywood films in the 60s and 70s. His role in The Dirty Dozen in 1967 was a turning point, followed by an iconic performance as Hawkeye Pierce in MASH. He then confirmed his talent in Klute alongside Jane Fonda, a film that brought him international recognition. Despite several nominations and awards throughout his career, he only received an honorary Oscar in 2017, a belated but well-deserved recognition of his immense contribution to cinema.
Donald Sutherland was also known for his bold choice of roles and his political commitment. In the '70s, he became actively involved in opposing the Vietnam War, using his notoriety to support the veterans' movement. His filmography reflects this diversity, oscillating between roles as villains, anti-heroes, romantic figures and mentors. His portrayal of President Snow in The Hunger Games saga has left its mark on a new generation of moviegoers.
Donald Sutherland 's television career was equally impressive, with roles in such series as Citizen X, for which he won an Emmy, and more recently The Undoing and Trust. A private celebration of his life will be organized by his family, respecting his wish for discretion.
