Probably one of the most talked-about games of the summer! Rollerdrome, developed by Roll7 and published by Private Division, was released on PC, PS4 and PS5 on August 16, 2022. A game in the same vein as the OlliOlli franchise, that is to say, a 3rd-person sliding game in a very comic-book graphic universe, with the difference that this one is darker and in 3D, but still developed by the same studio.
But Rollerdrome is a little more than a sliding game: it's also, and above all, a 3rd-person shooter, in which you have to kill all the enemies on the field to win the round. An explosive mix of genres, with gameplay that's a little more complex than you might think. What does it involve? Well, you've got to roll around an arena, as well as kill your opponents, but you also have to perform various tricks to recharge your weapons, for example. There are also missions to spice up the game.
"The year is 2030. In a world where corporations rule and the lines between reality and performance are blurred, the public is distracted by the violence and excess of a brutal new sport - Rollerdrome. Will you have what it takes to become the Rollerdrome champion and unravel the mysteries behind the Matterhorn company's true intentions?". A game in which we take on the role of Kara Hassan, a young competitor who will have to defeat all the enemies in front of her to reveal the truth.
Our review of Rollerdrome:
Rollerdrome is a surprising mix of genres, graphically very beautiful and requiring a little thought as to how to survive the arena's enemies. In terms of graphics, you're immediately immersed in this comic-book universe, with its meticulous attention to detail and visual success. It's an approach that works, going for the simplest without neglecting the rendering. In short, it's beautiful, it's good.
Gameplay-wise, it's fairly straightforward to get to grips with (you just roll and shoot), but there's no need to get bored as you strategize to defeat your enemies more easily. Using the terrain, reloading weapons, bullet time, spectacular tricks... It's all there to add depth to the game. Simple, effective!
Simple, simple... Some levels should still give you a hard time. Added to this are a few first-person exploration phases (think of the locker room at the start), adding just enough to understand the story and intrigue players, even if we would have liked a little more. In short, Rollerdrome is a good, no-fuss game that's sure to please curious gamers!
