Paris public prosecutor opens an investigation on Tuesday October 6, 2020 for “sports corruption” and “organized gang fraud”, after abnormal bets have been recorded by two Romanian players. They competed on September 30 a match as part of the French Open 2020 female double.

A match is said to have been rigged during French Open 2020. This is what Paris public prosecutor suspects, as it launches an investigation on October 1, 2020 after detecting abnormal behaviors during a female double game. Motives taken by the French law are “organized gang fraud” and “active and passive sports corruption”.

In concrete terms, the law suspects the female double match that opposed Romanian Andrea Mitu and Patricia Maria Tig to Yana Sizikova and Madison Brengle. On paper, nothing unusual since the Romanian players ended winning the match in two sets, 7-6 6-4. But the problem does not lie here: sports bet platforms have recorded a disproportionate number of bets especially in the 5th game of the second set.

As uncovered by L'Équipe, “huge amounts have been bet on the profit of the match by the Romanians to several operators in Paris, in several countries”. Player Sizikova seems to struggle to serve and botches a point after “offering” two double mistakes. The investigation has been entrusted by the public prosecutor to the main service of races and games (Service central des courses et des jeux), that is said to give conclusions very soon.
