If you're a regular at Roland-Garros and came to Porte d'Auteuil for the qualifying week, you may have noticed a small change! This year, there were far more curious onlookers and tennis fans in the aisles and in the stands, thanks to Opening Week, which enabled tickets to be purchased for between 10 and 20 euros a day. So much so that the ticket office sold out! And the effect was felt on site, with a 75% increase in attendance compared to 2022.
More people means a different atmosphere! And thefree-flowing alcohol in the aisles undoubtedly helped! For this year's event, spectators could choose between champagne, rosé, spritz or draught beer, which they could serve themselves. Under the blazing sun and warm temperatures, the alcohol quickly took its toll, and the fans in the stands were more demonstrative than usual. This behavior is much more common in soccer, for example, than in tennis.
According to FranceInfo, and in the words of one spectator,"in the stands, everyone whistles, everyone does the ole, etc.... At least there'ssome atmosphere in the stands! Which may not go down well with the players on court, who have to deal with a sometimes hostile, even disrespectful crowd, particularly against the French at the start of the competition.
