This summer, the Centre Pompidou is hosting a brand-new project, the"Cycloïde Piazza", designed by French artist Raphaël Zarka. Installed as part of the Cultural Olympiad preceding the Paris 2024 Olympics, this work mixing art and sport invites skateboarders of all levels to explore its colorful curves and diversified spaces. The 600m2 structure is a veritable playground for skateboarders, scooterists, rollerbladers and BMX riders.
This installation isn't just a skatepark. It also features bleachers, staircases, gangways and podiums, allowing us to rest, meet or simply enjoy the show. According to exhibition curator Jean-Max Colard, it's an"open agora", a public square that fosters sociability and interaction, echoing the vocation of the Centre Pompidou's forecourt.
Skateboarding and geometry enthusiast Raphaël Zarka describes his work as a laboratory for experimentation. The structure takes its name from the"cycloid" curve, considered the fastest in the world, and introduced for the first time in a skateboard infrastructure. According to the artist, skateboarding and geometry share a close relationship, both being based on extremely geometric spaces.
The inauguration took place in the presence of professional skateboarders, including Oskar "Oski" Rozenberg, who competed for Sweden in the 2020 Olympics. Rozenberg underlines the universal appeal of skateboarding, capable of attracting skateboarders and spectators alike, transforming the skatepark into an eye-catching work of art.
The project, supported by Nike, is open to the public every day from 11am to 8pm, except Tuesdays, until September 15. Several events are planned throughout the summer, including initiation sessions and demonstrations, offering a unique opportunity to discover and appreciate this fusion of art and sport.
For those looking for an unusual and fun spot this summer, the "Cycloïde Piazza" is a curiosity to be discovered at the Centre Pompidou. Whether you're a skater or just curious, this installation promises to be a great place for discovery and sharing. Come and explore this astonishing work, where geometry and skateboarding meet to create a space of freedom and creativity.
