With her outspokenness, her quirky look and her rebellious rock side, Brigitte Fontaine is an artist whose name is known to all, but whose musical work remains unknown to some. Yet Brigitte Fontaine is a key figure on the French underground scene, an unclassifiable artist and a fascinating contemporary poetess.
Retired from the stage since 2022, Brigitte Fontaine has a rich discography dating back to the mid-60s. These include"Comme à la radio" (1970),"Genre Humain"(1995), featuring the song " La Femme à Barbe ", the legendary"Kékéland" (2001) and, more recently,"Rue Saint Louis en l'île" (2004) and"Terre neuve"(2020).
On Friday, March 8, 2024, to mark International Women's Rights Day, France 5 is dedicating its second half of the evening to Brigitte Fontaine, broadcasting a never-before-seen documentary. Entitled " Brigitte Fontaine, réveiller les vivants" (Brigitte Fontaine, awakening the living ), this 52-minute film won the Prix du Public at the last Festival Musical Ecran.
Directed by Benoît Mouchart, Yann Orhan and Aurélien Guégan, the documentary " Brigitte Fontaine, réveiller les vivants " is an opportunity to discover this committed artist, who has always spoken out against the mistreatment of minorities, the oppressed and the weak, and who has always insisted on interpreting her own texts.
Brigitte Fontaine tells her own story in this documentary, using archive footage (much of it previously unseen). For the occasion, she is surrounded by artists with whom she has collaborated, such as Etienne Daho, Matthieu Chedid and Arthur H. Other artists who make no secret of their admiration for the " queen of kékés " are also announced, such as PR2B and Rebeka Warrior. Her partner in life and on stage, composer Areski Belkacem, is also included in the cast of this groundbreaking documentary, which paints a portrait of a talented contemporary French poetess who is a must-see!
