Rossini's work seen through the prism of modernity... This is what the Opéra Garnier is offering with several performances of its famous opera buffa, The Barber of Seville, from June 10 to July 13, 2025. The composer's work is adapted from the novel of the same name by Pierre-Augustin Caron de Beaumarchais.
If you're familiar with French literature, you'll know the story: Figaro, a barber by trade, comes to the aid of Count Almaviva to win the heart of Rosine, who is in the grip of Doctor Bartholo. With the help of Don Basilio, Bartholo intends to marry his ward. An impossible love story between Rosine and Almaviva, as opera loves them, which ends on a high note for the two lovebirds, not without the help of the ingenious Figaro, never short of ideas and disguises.
The opera is staged here by Damiano Michieletto, a native of Venice, cradle of the Commedia delle'Arte, and capable of retranscribing the"burlesque vein of Rossinian music" found in the original version. A transposition of the work to a contemporary Seville,"inspired by the cinema of Almodovar"... In short, an opportunity to rediscover a masterpiece of French literature through the prism of Rossini's composition, as well as one of the most popular works among opera lovers. Shall we go, folks?
